Tough at the top

At 1400 BST, the forecast strong westerly winds had arrived at the north of the course for the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race, providing challenging conditions for the yachts in the region. Three competitors have retired in the last 24 hours and Jankees Lampe's Open 40, La Promesse has suspended racing and is heading for Stornoway to effect mainsail repairs, before restarting the race.

Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race | Speed and power combine for epic start

All 28 yachts are now heading east along the Solent having now started the 1800 mile race around Britain and Ireland. A large crowd of spectators outside the Royal Yacht Squadron saw the fleet away. In bright sunshine, with a stiff southwesterly wind and a significant positive tide, it was a magnificent start with yachts flying through the surf under spinnakers.

Tomorrow sees the launch of MDL Marinas’ new charity initiative - My MDL Selfie – challenging berth holders, marina visitors and boating enthusiasts to get snapping this summer. British America’s Cup Challenge launched

Sir Ben Ainslie, the most successful Olympic sailor in history, is setting his sights on the America’s Cup.

On Tuesday, he introduced his team during a ceremony at Queens House, in England, to launch his America’s Cup challenge.

“This is the last great historic sporting prize never won by Great Britain. It has always been my ambition to mount a home challenge,” he said. “The time is right and I am hugely encouraged by the support we are getting, not least from the Duchess of Cambridge. I learned a great deal aboard Oracle in San Francisco and I would not be challenging if I did not believe we have a real chance of winning this time.”

Bullit and Illes Pitiuses Victorious At Coutts Quarter Ton Cup 2014

27 June 2014 - Cowes, UK - Epic is without doubt the best way to describe the concluding day of the tenth anniversary Coutts Quarter Ton Cup. From the opening race where places eight to twenty three were separated by less than a minute on corrected time, via the day's five dead heats, to the final race showdown where second to sixth place were separated by only six seconds, it was a drama of Wagnerian proportions. Warm sunshine and a southwesterly breeze that built from just below ten knots to over fifteen, ensured perfect conditions and Race Officer Rob Lamb took full advantage to get the final three races of the series completed in rapid order, much to the delight of the competitors.


Britannia arrives in Cowes
