Artemis-Team Endeavour, skippered by Brian Thompson, crossed the finish line of the 2014 Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race off the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes at 23.00.54 BST on Saturday 16th August 2014 with an elapsed time of 5 days, 14 hours, 00 minutes and 54 seconds, setting a new World Record for Monohulls 60 feet and less (subject to ratification by the WSSRC).

At 1400 BST, the forecast strong westerly winds had arrived at the north of the course for the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race, providing challenging conditions for the yachts in the region. Three competitors have retired in the last 24 hours and Jankees Lampe's Open 40, La Promesse has suspended racing and is heading for Stornoway to effect mainsail repairs, before restarting the race.

Saturday saw the conclusion of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week 2014. The overall prize-giving on Saturday evening was attended by some 300 people and regatta organisers, Cowes Week Limited, reflected on a Week of mixed weather conditions.

With just 2 weeks to go until GJW Direct SailFest the early entry prize was drawn this morning for the last prize draw Garmin VIRB Elite action camera - with more cameras to be won at the event itself, the Garmin Summer Series final round at Calshot over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The announcement late last week that SailFest is to host the 18ft Skiff UK Nationals has already prompted a handful of entries from the fleet and it was one of these, the entry from Steve McLean, that was drawn from the hat. Expect some exciting footage as the camera will be presented to Steve at the briefing on Saturday, ready to go.

All 28 yachts are now heading east along the Solent having now started the 1800 mile race around Britain and Ireland. A large crowd of spectators outside the Royal Yacht Squadron saw the fleet away. In bright sunshine, with a stiff southwesterly wind and a significant positive tide, it was a magnificent start with yachts flying through the surf under spinnakers.

Cowes Week Limited (CWL) introduced Ladies Day for the first time in 2006 with one simple objective; to raise the profile of sailing as one of few mainstream sports where men and women compete on equal terms. Over the last decade, female participation across the sport has grown and at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week a third of all competitors taking part in the racing are female.

Cowes Week participation came at a price for the skipper of a Norwegian ocean racer when just after beginning the long passage home this evening he received a potentially serious injury, resulting in an urgent call for help to the local RNLI inshore lifeboat.

The Solent was alive with boats this morning at the start of the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland race that got underway after a 21-hour postponement due to heavy conditions left in the wake of hurricane Bertha. The Sultanate of Oman’s flagship 70ft trimaran, Musandam-Oman Sail, cast off from Cowes with a 50% Omani crew for the first time since the start of the Oman Sail programme in 2008.
